Q: How much does it cost to play?
A: The entire weekend, including a bunk, some food at the inn, and more, will cost you $30.
Q: Can I come to watch to see if it's right for me?
A: We encourage those who are curious about the game to participate. KoN does not allow spectators or independent photographers to be bystanders at game as it both draws from the fantasy immersion as well as distracts our players.
Q: What do you recommend to a new player for their first event?
A: I suggest acquiring some simple garb (tunic, boots, drawstring pants) and playing as an NPC for a weekend. You'll gain significant XP towards your future PC level as well as be able to familiarize yourself with what KoN has to offer. Many assumptions about game will go out the window once you arrive and see it for yourself, so you'll have a better foundation to build your character concept on once you play various NPC roles for a weekend.
Q: I see a lot of terms like IC, IG, OOC, PC, NPC, meta-gaming, etc. What does all this mean?
A: IC (aka IG) and OOC are both abbreviations for In-Character and Out Of Character. The former means it is part of gameplay, the latter means it pertains to real-life. Metagaming is a term used when a person takes OOC information and applies it to their characters' IC knowledge. Players should always keep IC separate from OOC information. If you learn while hanging out at a diner that so-and-so killed a merchant last game, that's OOC information. Your character in game (IG) would not know anything OOC and you should roleplay as if you never even found out. The term PC stands for Player Character and NPC stands for Non-Player Character. NPCs are the various creatures, monsters, and plot-roles played when characters aren't their PC. A PC is who you play in the game; it is your own personal avatar in the world of Novitas. It is very important that you know the difference between IC and OOC in game-situations. If someone is yelling at you or taunting your PC, IC, they are acting. Please don't take it personally.
Q: I've read the rulebook and I want to play a PC. How does this work?
A: First, create a character concept and a name using the character creation rules in the rulebook as a guideline. On site, players will be given a character sheet during sign-in and an experienced player will assist you in creating your PC. All new players are required to play their first two shifts as NPCs before they can play their PC. All players, in general, must NPC at least 2 shifts out of the 4 during a weekend unless a special case comes up (like during Harvest Festival, Feb Feast, or any All-PC shift).
Q: Are there certain garb requirements for players in this game?
A: Yes. KoN strives towards garb and costuming levels akin to most Renaissance Faire environments. We don't allow prochronistic clothing of any kind (no sneakers, zippers, t-shirts, hoodies, shorts, or anything obviously modern).
Q: What are the accommodations provided for the weekend?
A: Camp Kingsley offers us year-round events, indoor heated sleeping for 80 people in three large cabins and three smaller A-frame cabins, overflow heated indoor sleeping in the Logistics building for 50, and sixteen lean-tos that sleep an additional 100 people in warmer months. There are indoor showers and toilets (not available December through March), and two large bathhouses. Hot food can be acquired at the inns for in-game currency, or in Logistics while you are playing on your NPC shifts. It is recommended that you bring water, snacks, a sleeping bag, and enough garb to last you the weekend. KoN provides augmentations to costumes for various NPC roles, but will not provide players with full personal garb. As an NPC, you'll be able to borrow weapons for the duration of the event. As a PC, you'll be required to provide your own weapon for game. KoN supplies all in-game loot as well as coin which you may keep on your person and bring to future events.
